IN RESIDENCY IN SALA HIROSHIMA
A production by Festival Grec & Sala Hiroshima

The bigger the myth, the smaller the man. The National Body poses a round trip between the collective consciousness and the individual body. The body of an athlete destined to magnify the legend of a nation can be read as a metaphor for the phagocytosis to which the state subjects individuals to attain national glory. Through a collection of learned and artificial gestures, the gymnast becomes a collective myth, a rhetorical toy that nullifies his individual identity but enhances the identity-state. As in classical tragedies, it is necessary to sacrifice the hero to sustain a story that defines us as a political group. Thus, the perfect and virtuous body on stage appears as a political mirror of the ideal.

From the scenic and dramatic clash between the biographies of former gymnast Enrique Navarro and Kaspar Hauser —a teenager who mysteriously appeared in Nuremberg in 1828 after being held for more than twelve years in a dark basement without contact with anyone else—, The National Body proposes an open research on how the collective’s gaze affects individual identity, on how the desires and hopes of others limit and shape personal choices. A reflection on the idea of myth, the need for the epic and the castrating potential of the viewer’s gaze.

The National Body is the new project by Pau Masaló, a very interesting Catalan playwright that in 2017, as part of the GREC Festival of Barcelona, presented in Hiroshima, Utopia, winner of the Adrià Gual Award. Masaló has been part of different productions such as Flamingos by Albert Quesada, or Coda by Atresbandes and Quartet Brossa. In all of his previous works he has demonstrated a truly profound analysis of the material he has dealt with, which he then brings to the stage with special designs of great beauty, and a selection of texts and aesthetic references that help him to project an image of contemporary Europe. One to watch out for in the Hiroshima season.
