DANCE / THEATRE / MANIFESTO
NORTHERN IRELAND
PREMIÈRE IN SPAIN
WITH THE COLLABORATION OF MERCAT DE LES FLORS
60

This young Irish choreographer has amazed audiences and dance professionals all over Europe. Many festivals, such as the Edinburgh Fringe, have lauded her a revelation of an artist. Through her magnificent performance, sound, space and costumes, Doherty evokes the stereotype of the young man from the underprivileged neighbourhoods of Northern Ireland. Gold chains, oversized white sweatpants, a hyper-masculinised physical attitude and voices from a documentary drama, overlap with Miserere Mei, Deus by Allegri. Doherty’s beautiful choreography stylises those coded and recognisable gestures of the male from the slums, raising him to a dazzling limbo. The smicks and the knackers (Irish gypsies) with their hoodies and cars from the 90s, become birds of paradise. This social manifesto in the form of a dance and theatre piece, brings light to the prejudice we have of a stigmatised social class. This is an attempt to find beauty and hope in a periphery landscape.

Oona Doherty propose a workshop related to this piece which will take place on 1st October from 10h to 14h. For more information and booking you can send an email to hola@hiroshima.cat.
