“Who needs Realism when we can have Fakism?”

Before is a magnificent rarity of Hiroshima’s programming and a small jewel in new Portuguese dramaturgy. Recently presented at Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, Pedro Penim’s text approaches with irony and humour, the feeling of saudade, the longing of the past. It speaks up about the yearning for a return to a past time perceived as glorious and desirable when facing a painful present. This disease, shared by many civilisations throughout history, always diagnoses the end of an era. The mise-en-scène presents a simple but surreal situation; a dinosaur exposes its reflections and anguishes to a sort of condescending therapist who listens to it. Teatro Praga is a collective of artists born in 1995 in Lisbon and which has been presented in festivals and theatres around the globe. They mock the established order and believe that unpredictable variations of themselves are a way of broadening the concept of predictability. A fundamental piece of the season.
